About | On the Table

We know that big ideas can spring from small conversations and that people invest in what they help create. When we find common ground on community issues and challenges that matter to people, powerful things can happen.

In other communities across the country, On the Table has proven that residents share a desire to come together, collaborate more, become more civically involved, and more committed to their community. While we know that there’s no “quick fix” to the issues facing our region, progress will result from residents and organizations working to make contributions that add up to solutions that help unite the place we call home.

This project is part of a national initiative funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. On the Table replicates an annual civic engagement initiative of the same name developed by The Chicago Community Trust in 2014. Support for On the Table advances Knight Foundation’s work to help cities attract and keep talented people, expand economic opportunity, and create a culture of civic engagement. Knight Foundation believes that successful communities are equitable, inclusive, and participatory.

About the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation

Knight Foundation is a national foundation with strong local roots. We invest in journalism, in the arts, and in the success of cities where brothers John S. and James L. Knight once published newspapers. Our goal is to foster informed, and engaged communities, which we believe are essential for a healthy democracy.

The Knight brothers believed that a well-informed community could best determine its own true interests and was essential to a well-functioning, representative democracy. The brothers pursued those beliefs, building and running one of America’s largest and most successful 20th-century newspaper companies.

The Knights formed Knight Foundation to promote excellence in journalism and the success of the communities in which they worked, in the words of Jim Knight. The company was sold, and the Foundation, ever-evolving, carries on this work.
